Former British fencer Folayemi Akinyosoye has officially switched his allegiance to Nigeria, choosing to represent his country of heritage after a successful career with Great Britain. The 20-year-old has been a prominent figure in British junior fencing for six years, and his decision comes as fencing gains popularity in Nigeria.
British Fencing CEO Georgina Usher confirmed that Akinyosoye’s transfer request was accepted, waiving the usual three-year non-compete period set by the International Fencing Federation (FIE). Akinyosoye expressed enthusiasm about representing Nigeria, emphasizing his family roots and his desire to help develop the sport in the country.
He hopes to inspire young Nigerians to take an interest in Sabre fencing and is optimistic about Nigeria’s potential for the 2028 Olympic Games, planning to collaborate with the Nigeria Fencing Federation to enhance both his skills and the sport’s visibility.
Adeyinka Samuel, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, welcomed Akinyosoye’s commitment, highlighting its significance for the growth of fencing in Nigeria and expressing excitement for his future participation in international competitions, including the Olympics.
